History: Rolf Steiner was a son of a shoemaker, and his teen years were prone with trouble. In 1934 he joined the Nazi party, not so much because of a political beliefs, but as a ruffian, and enjoyed the street battles in Vienna with the communists. In 1936 he was expelled from the party after being caught with the wife of a high-ranking party member. He then joined the communists for a while and fought the Nazi’s. By 1938, it was obvious that a Greater German union was forthcoming, so Steiner quit the communist party by burning down their office.
Sometime after the German occupation of Austria, Steiner was arrested by the Gestapo because of his activities with the communists. After being jailed and questioned for a week, he was let go under the condition that he joined the army. To Steiner, this was a gift. No more worries of where his next meal would come from. After his training, he was assigned to an observation pillbox on the Seigfried Line facing the French Maginot Line. Despite rumors of war with France, it was boring, and so in the summer of 1939 he applied for a transfer to a Panzer unit. His transfer was granted, but it was too late for him to take part in the invasion of Poland. He was assigned to Panzergruppe Guderian in time for the invasion of France, and was in General Rommel’s armored spearhead that drove to the sea dividing the British and French armies.
After the victory in France, they were to rest, then prepare for the invasion of England, but instead was assigned to the 5th Light division that was hurriedly sent to Africa as part of the newly-formed Afrika Corp. There Steiner fought with the 21st Panzer Division until late 1941, when he was wounded during the British Operation Crusader, and evacuated to Germany.
Upon his recovery, he was re-assigned to the 27th Panzer Division in Russia near Stalingrad, arriving just in time for the Russian counteroffensive. Disbanded and re-assigned to various infantry units, Steiner was stationed on the Taman Penninsula through 1943 until the German collapse and retreat from the Crimea. During this time he was again wounded, losing consciencness when a mortar round went off next to him, and waking up in a hospital in East Prussia. He returned to his unit along with a couple other men from his platoon, only to get back in time to be overrun again. They got out of the Crimea just before it was completely cut off by the Red Army, and they were pushed back to the city of Odessa in April 1944. After nearly two years on the Russian Front, Steiner’s platoon was assigned to Normandy France for a rest period where they were a reserve unit stationed at a chateau near the town of Vennis.
(My character is based on Sgt Steiner in the movie Cross of Iron.)
